Happy Birthday! - 5 Ways to Keep it Local

Happy Birthday! - 5 Ways to Keep it Local

It is my oldest son's 6th birthday today! And over these last few weeks leading up to his big day and party, I've been asking him what he would like for presents. He often replied with "whatever you want to get me", which is a sweet answer but also was not helpful. So I began thinking of things he enjoys: video games, hockey/sports, playing outside, trading Pokemon cards, building LEGO and having Nerf wars.

I also wanted to incorporate something local into his present, which presented itself to be a big challenge. Besides a handmade sweater or locally produced bath products, I was wracking my brain on what to get him that he would appreciate! Because let's be honest, most kids are less excited about clothing and more so about the toys at the bottom of the bag.

So with this, I made a list of 5 ways to still support your local community while you are planning your child's birthday party (or an adult party as well!):

*a list of business corresponding to each point are available below*

1. Order the cake, cupcakes, cookies, etc, from a local baker! Many bakers can create stunning and delicious creations that include your child's favourite show, video game characters, colour and more!

2. Rent a space for the birthday party from a locally owned facility. Or if you would prefer to use your own home, have a face painter, princesses or superheroes, balloon animal maker, magician or other type of entertainment come into your home.

3. Research locally owned stores that specialize in the items your child is into! There are a handful of video game, board game and toy stores here in YXE.

4. Purchase handmade party decor. Not only can they customize the decor with your child's name, age and party theme, the quality of their products is often 10x better than the big box stores.

5. Shop at local handmade store (like P+P) and craft markets to find handmade, locally owned gift ideas.
